If there's one thing you should do when starting a home business, it's realize you don't have to blindly jump in with both feet. In recent years, there's been an onslaught of new home businesses, mainly Internet businesses. This came about due to the rising cost of living and daycare expenses, and the desire of thousands of parents to return home to be with their children. What this means for you if you're thinking of starting a home business is you can learn valuable lessons from others who have gone before you. You can know up front what to expect with a home business and how to maximize your profits. Let's look at five principals to help you get on track with a successful home business. |
1. Goal Setting
Before you rush out and buy home office furniture, you should have some written goals in place. These don't have to be specific (at least not yet), but should outline in general what you'd like to accomplish with a home business. How much money do you need to start up your business? How do you plan to build and promote your business? Will you work alone or hire others to help? What are your financial goals now and in the future?
Once you set some general goals, you'll set more specific, short-term goals when you start working in the actual business. Short-term goals should be written down on a daily, weekly or monthly basis (or all three), and they should reflect small, realistic goals that can be checked off as you reach them. For example, a daily goal might be to make ten contacts with potential customers. If you operate a retail site, your goal might be to complete certain promotions for the day or week. Small financial goals should be set weekly or monthly so you can monitor your progress.
2. Develop a Comfortable, Business-Oriented Office Space
Whether you have an entire room designated for office space or just a corner of your bedroom, you should try to make it as business-like as possible. If you have a desk, chair and filing cabinet located in the corner of your bedroom or any other room, one idea is to block off this area with a decorative dressing/changing screen. These come in various sizes, shapes and designs so you can find one to fit your style. It will provide privacy while also blocking out distractions, and gives a feel of being in an office cubicle.
Let your family know that this is your work space, and there should be as few interruptions as possible while working. Create a space where you can feel as though you're "going to the office" and "leaving the office" at the beginning and end of each work day.
3. Organization
Organize your work space and paperwork so you won't have to spend 20 minutes looking for important papers when you need them. Buy a file cabinet large enough to suit your filing needs, and organize it with folders. Buy a label maker to create labels for your files and hanging folders. Have a section for customers, taxes, payroll, suppliers, bills, accounts payable/receivable, etc. Also, organize files in folders on your computer hard drive or documents section if you work primarily online. This will make work go smoother and help you maximize your efforts and time spent working at home.
Buy an office chair that's both comfortable and supportive since you will spend many hours sitting at your desk. Organize your desk, computer, keyboard, and phone so that each item is within easy reach to avoid strain on your neck or back throughout the day.
4. Keep a Constant Work Schedule
Keeping a schedule is the key to having a peaceable, steadfast operation. It's easy to get off track when working at home. You might not realize how many distractions there are at home...kids, food, bed, TV, phone calls, visits, mail arrives (any excuse to take a break, right?) household chores, and anything else that might interrupt your concentration. If you allow interruptions to take over, pretty soon you'll be working around the clock and never feel you're accomplishing anything.
Set your own work schedule that works for you and your family, and do your best to stick with your schedule. Work while the kids are at school. Work very early in the morning while the kids sleep, or late at night if that works for you.
5. Take a "Relaxing" Break
It's tempting to do the dishes, cut the grass, wash clothes, or iron clothes during breaks, but a break from work should be a time of relaxation and reflection. Take a walk and get some fresh air to clear your mind. Drink some fresh, cold water or eat a bite of fruit. If you have kids, spend a moment with them doing something fun and relaxing. In other words, a break should be your time to unwind and relieve stress so you can think more clearly when you return to your desk. Develop a plan for your own personal getaway. Even if it's only for 15 minutes - every moment counts!
These lessons may sound simple, but they are extremely important if you want to succeed at operating a home business. You can have the best of both worlds with a little self discipline and some reachable goals!
