You'll spend thousands of dollars chasing their promises, and still have an empty wallet in the end!

Let's talk about the reality of home business. Starting a home business is really no different from opening a store on Main Street except you get to do all the work from home. Being home doesn't exclude the hard work, trial and error, or patiently waiting for that first customer. It just enables you to do all these while in the comfort of your own home! The stress levels can be just as high at times. With a home business, you'll have slow times when stress comes because of low finances. When you get extremely busy, you'll have stress while trying to get all the work finished on time and still have time for your family. So in most ways, a home business is no different than any other.

Here are some dos of a home business. Don't skip any of these steps. They are crucial to your success - and sanity!

1) Do Build Your Own Business, Not That of Another

Find a unique product or service you can offer and create your home business around that service. The key here is "unique." You've probably heard of niche marketing. Your "niche" might be very small, but online you can still gain thousands of customers from that small niche because there are so many people you can reach. Here are some niche ideas: sewing alterations by mail, hand-made crafts, writing and selling ebooks about subjects you know, writing legal and medical documents, drawing blueprints, enthusiast site about "whatever," etc.

2) Do Cater to Customers

Build your Web site to cater to your customers. Develop compelling presentations that will lead your customers throughout the site. Also, organize your site neatly for easy navigation.

3) Do Test Always

It's necessary to test every aspect of your business, especially at the start. You can test by promoting your site with different presentations and pricing to find out which receives the most response.

4) Do Build Customer Trust

Always give excellent customer service. Answer customer emails within the same day. Send thank you notes if selling a high-dollar item. Don't spam your customers with unwanted emails. Deliver your product on time.

5) Do Provide Tips

Your target customers are searching for tips online. You should provide many tips related to your services through articles on your site. Also, start a newsletter by email (ezine) and add subscription options to all your site pages. This is a great way to stay in contact with your visitors. If you're not sure how to start an ezine, contact your host for ideas. Also, hire someone to write content for you if you're not a writer.

Don'ts of a Home Business

This article wouldn't be balanced if it only shared the positive. There are also some things to avoid with a home business. Read below.

1) Don't Waste Money

Never sign up for an advertising campaign that you're not sure about. Many companies offer 10,000 targeted visitors for $59.95 to $79.95. These are often scam artists who will send you "fake" traffic. One of the most effective methods of advertising is by paying for targeted clicks through well-known pay-per-click search engines. Google offers the Google Adwords program. Other programs are Overture, Findwhat and Yahoo. Another proven way to gain visitors is by providing tips on your site for free. Submit each tip or article page to the search engines with keywords in your meta tags relating to the article. Search engines favor content-oriented Web sites.

2) Don't Expect a Pot of Gold

Set realistic goals for your business. Plan to stay in it for the long haul, even if it means working another job part time as you build. The average length of time for success or failure in a business is two years (up to five years for some). Any business must have time to grow and gain repeat customers.
