With vehicle insurance rates being so high for teenagers, it can be difficult to decide how or when to allow your teen to drive. Teen drivers are considered to be high risk drivers by auto insurance companies because they are often immature and/or inexperienced, and are more likely to take unnecessary risks while driving. These tips will help settle you on teen car insurance and how to get the best coverage for your money. |
Insurance Requirements for Permit Use
When your teen first starts learning to drive, they'll be required to obtain a driver's permit from your local Department of Motor Vehicles. A computerized test will be given, and upon passing, your teen can be issued a legal driver's permit. While driving with a permit, your teen will need car insurance coverage.
Check with your current auto insurance agent to see if your policy will cover permit driving for your own vehicle. If not, you'll have to obtain separate vehicle insurance coverage while they are learning.
Buying a Car for Your Teen Son or Daughter
After obtaining a driver's license, you might wish to buy a car for your son or daughter. Before making a purchase, check with your car insurance agency to see what the premium will be. Keep in mind that sports cars will cost substantially more to insure. Also, the greater the value of the car, the more the insurance will be. You will likely be better off purchasing a used car that can be paid off quickly.
Many parents allow their teens to work a part-time job during high school or college to save money and buy their own car. This is a great way to teach values and good work ethic while reaching their goal for an automobile. They will appreciate the vehicle more if they contribute to buying it.
Safety Issues for Teens
Not only do you want a dependable car for your teen, but a safe one. Safety features such as side- and front-impact air bags, automatic seat belts, anti-lock brakes, and traction control can lower your teen's vehicle insurance premium. The more safety features the car has, the more comfortable you will feel when sending them on the road alone.
Teen Car Insurance Savings with Discounts
Check with your insurance company to see if your son or daughter qualifies for any discounts. Discounts are often available for honor students with a high grade point average, students who enroll in and complete driver's education classes, those who enroll in college, or those who are involved with local community organizations such as Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.
When to Add Your Teen to Your Policy
If you don't feel comfortable buying your teen their own vehicle or cannot afford the additional car payment and insurance expenses, consider adding them as a driver on your insurance. You can easily add them to your policy and may find this to be the cheapest route since they will not be the primary driver.
It's best to help your teen take their driving liberties in steps to show the importance and seriousness of driving. Allow your teen some time to prove that they will indeed be a safe driver before handing over the steering wheel completely. Teach them the importance of driving safety on the road and how serious driving can be. They should understand that carelessness can mean severe lifetime injuries or even death.
Encourage your teen to keep their driving record clean throughout life so they can maintain a clear conscious and a low vehicle insurance premium.
