Decorating the Baby's Nursery with a Theme

Decorating the baby's nursery with a theme is not a must, but it can make things easier once you choose a theme. A nursery theme helps to save time and money, and simplifies the decorating process. After you've selected a theme, you can easily match wall colors, furniture, window coverings, the crib and bedding, lamps, and other items with very little effort. Let's explore some possible baby nursery themes.

Baby Nursery Themes for Boys

Decorating the baby's nursery for a boy is easier now than ever with so many themes available for boys. Airplane themes are great because the airplanes can come in many "boy" colors such as red, blue, green, and yellow. Airplanes are fun and your baby boy will likely love this theme as a toddler too. There are airplane die cut rugs, airplane toy chests, airplane lamps, airplane bedding, and even airplane nursery chandeliers! Also, consider expanding to general transportation themes for some nursery décor products if you can't find an airplane theme for every item.

Another fun theme that can be “all-boy” is a western nursery theme. Decorating western, you can find baby room items with horses, cowboys, cowboy hats and boots, lassos, wagons, horseshoes, and cactus plants. Western themes look great with cream-colored walls and lots of dark and light brown with hints of red and green. Also, rugged wood items such as dressers, the crib, tables, a wooden rocking chair, and an armoire go great with this theme. Top it off with a western wall mural featuring a town from the Old West or a rodeo along with a western-theme wall border.

Jungle themes work great for boys' nurseries because of all the wild animals, trees, and others signs of nature. Boys like to explore and a jungle theme will usually last until kindergarten or beyond. You might also consider decorating the baby's nursery (if a boy) with these themes: Snoopy, frogs, farm themes, trains, sports themes, dinosaurs, fire trucks, reptiles, Dr. Seuss, circus, or puppies.

Decorating the Baby's Nursery for a Girl

Girls are quite different than boys. The colors, textures, and furniture all have a softer look with pastels such as light pink, light yellow, or light cream colors. Consider a Precious Moments theme with white, pink and yellow colors to match. Or, a girl's baby room looks great with angels, butterflies, princess themes, or bunnies. Add lots of frills and lace, and choose bedding to match the theme. Paint the walls soft, light colors and use furnishings and themed paintings to decorate. Add dolls, stuffed animals, and mini tea sets for that finishing touch! There are many Disney themes that work great for girls, so be sure to shop around before deciding on the theme.

For Boys or Girls

If you want to remain neutral with your baby nursery decor, choose neutral themes such as bumble bees, clouds, farm animals, garden themes, teddy bears, or zoo animals. There are also many storybook or movie nursery themes that can work well for a boy or girl such as Tale of Peter Rabbit (Beatrix Potter crib bedding and other items), Winnie the Pooh, Care Bears, Finding Nemo, Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, Little Bear, etc.

Whatever theme you pick, be sure there are enough baby-related items on the market to support the theme. You don't want to get stuck with only half of the things you need with the desired theme or colors. Look around at local baby stores and online to be sure enough items are available within your budget. With a great theme, decorating the baby's nursery will be exciting for everyone!
