When decorating a baby room, you want to keep the textures, colors, and patterns soft and cuddly while creating a room that fits your style and needs. The baby room decor should be inviting, pleasant, and practical. |
Decorating your baby's room is one of the highlights of your pregnancy. But remember, the key to a great nursery is to create a room that not only meets your baby's needs, but your needs as a new mother as well.
Create a Baby Nursery Budget
Before getting started, create a baby nursery budget so you wont overspend. Decide what amount you can spend, and make a list of items and estimated pricing for each item. Determine what you can do yourself to save money and decorating ideas that might require you to hire the work out. For instance, you might not be able to paint the room yourself, so you'll have a hire a professional painter.
You might have to hire someone to hang wall paper, or you can add a wall border easily on your own. Also, you can decorate the floors with rugs cheaper than hiring someone to add carpet or special flooring. Check with several nursery furniture sources before buying large items such as the crib, changing table, baby swing, and dresser.
Pick Out Color Schemes for the Baby Room
The colors in your baby room should be fitting for either a boy or girl, or neutral if you plan to make it a surprise! Choose a wall color that will blend well with your theme and colors. Pastels are popular for wall paint, such as light pink, light cream, light tan, lavender, light yellow, or light green. For boys, you might use plain white or a light shade of blue depending on the theme. A popular blend for boys includes shades of blue, red, and yellow. The colors should go well with your furniture and decor items without overtaking the room.
Decorating a Baby Room with a Theme
You can base your baby room decor on a particular color, or you might choose a certain theme for all your items. Baby themes can be animals, cars, trucks, airplanes, the alphabet, or characters from stories or movies such as Beatrix Potter crib bedding with Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh, Raggedy Ann, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Cinderella, Finding Nemo, Precious Moments, Care Bears, etc. If having twins, prepare for the possibility that you might have a boy and girl in the same room.
Accessorize Your Baby Room
The final touch to decorating a baby room is to add accessories and furniture. First, be sure you have the items you need, such as a sturdy changing table, a rocking chair, a durable (and safe) baby crib, a dresser or armoire, a diaper holder, a baby monitor, and a basinet or cradle. Next, add accessories and decor items such as a nightlight, a small end table with a lamp, floor rugs, window coverings, and paintings. Also, be sure to add a few baby toys, plush animals to go with the theme, baby books, and a baby music box.
For window coverings, be sure to choose curtains or shades that will block harsh sun rays during the day and provide plenty of security at night. The window shades should allow natural light in the baby room as desired. Pull-up shades without cords are preferable over blinds with cords so you can continue using these when the child begins to walk without fear of them grabbing or getting caught in the cords.
Keep in mind that you may continue this baby room decor for several years - perhaps through the toddler years. Choose baby furniture and accessories that will last. Decorating a baby room can be fun and easy if you plan ahead!
