Baby nursery decor can be fun and exciting, all except the painting for most. Painting the baby nursery is probably one of the most dreaded tasks, but is usually necessary to have the proper background for your baby room theme. When painting the baby room, you'll want it to be safe for you as a new mother and the baby. |
You will spend much time in this room once the baby is born, so keep this in mind when choosing paint and in your methods of painting. Heres a quick guide to properly paint your baby nursery.
Choose Baby Safe Paint
Some types of paint give off harmful fumes, even after completely dry. Choose paint for your baby nursery decor that's safe from VOC. VOC is the abbreviation for Volatile Organic Compound. This compound has been widely used in oil based paint and many traditional latex based paints.
Unfortunately, VOC exposure can cause asthma attacks, respiratory episodes, dizziness, eye irritation, and nausea. Long-term exposure has been linked to liver and kidney disease and even some cases of cancer. Look for alternative paints that do not contain VOC, such as paints marked low odor, low VOC, zero VOC, non-toxic, or natural paint. Also, be sure the paint is lead-free. These are safe to use for baby nursery decor without exposing you and your baby to harmful chemicals.
Paint Color for Baby Nursery Decor
Deciding on a color is easy once you know the main theme of your nursery. Pick the baby nursery theme first and then decide on a paint color that will complement that theme. Be sure to stay with light colors if you plan to use a theme for all other items in the room. Keep in mind that paint colors often dry darker than they appear. Ask a local paint store for color samples to take home so you can compare them in the actual baby room. If possible, try to choose a color that will last far beyond the baby years so you wont have to paint again soon. Will the color suffice when your baby becomes a toddler?
Pastels are popular for baby nursery decor. These include light shades of green, pink, blue, tan, yellow, and cream. If you plan to have the paint as the main focus of the room, you might go with bolder colors such as red or dark blue.
Paint Supplies
After deciding on a color, it's time to buy supplies. For painting an entire room, buy enough paint to cover the walls, moldings, and window trim. Also, buy a drop cloth to protect the floors and furniture. Supplies you'll need include a two - to four-inch paint brush, a roller, masking tape to cover fixtures, door rims, and window glass, and an edger for hard-to-reach spots.
Preparation and Painting
For your baby nursery decor to look professional, you must prep the room before painting. This will save a great deal of time and frustration later. Prep means moving things out of the way, placing masking tape where needed, and being sure all carpeting or flooring is covered to protect from dripping. Covering the floor and all furniture is especially important if you plan to paint the ceiling. Also, open windows and doors to provide ventilation while painting. If you are pregnant, check with your doctor before painting or allow someone else to paint for you.
Now you're ready to start painting. Paint the ceiling first, then the walls with a roller brush, and then the trim work. The trim work is usually the most tedious, but doing all the major work first will give you time to concentrate on the details, knowing you're putting the finishing touches on your masterpiece! Allow the paint to dry completely before adding stripes, designs, or accents to the walls.
Once the paint is completely dry, you're ready to add furniture and accessories to your baby nursery decor. You'll feel pleased with your hard work when the room is complete!
