Planting a flower garden is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Starting with seeds or small plants, you can watch them grow into blossoming beauties under your care. Your flower garden is a place to work, play, create, and dream. No matter what your garden size or budget restrictions, you can design a place to enjoy nature and express yourself.
Gardening Basics
Learn a few basics about gardening to get started if you have no experience. To start with, you must have balanced soil to grow healthy plants. If you have a lot of sand, it is good to add peat moss so that water and food will be better absorbed. Another important element to check for is water content. If your garden will be at the bottom of a slope or low ground, the plant could drown or rot from too much water. Its a good idea to raise the flowerbed four or five inches to help with drainage. Most urban soil is lacking nutrients. Two weeks before planting, you should add fertilizer to the ground to prepare it for the plants. The plants will continue to need nutrients, which you can add every few weeks.
Choosing Plants
The types of plants you plant in your garden will depend on the climate of your area, shading and sun placement, and soil conditions. Using native plants works well because they have adapted to your area's environment, and will not need as much care. Fragile plants will need extra care and maybe extra shade from fences or shrubs, as well as protection from aggressive plants. Some exotic plants can be aggressive because their natural predators are absent.
Check at a local nursery to see what native plants they sell. Find plants that work well together, such as tall plants that can shade the smaller ones. Choose your plants while remembering that some flowers attract birds and others attract butterflies or bees. Flowers bloom at different times of the year, so you can plant them to bloom all at one time or stagger them throughout the season.
Planting Time
When your soil is prepared, plant your flowers, trees, or shrubs on a cloudy day in the early morning or late afternoon. Most flowers should be planted in the spring unless there are special instructions from the nursery. Dig a hole larger than the root base and gently massage the roots before planting. Fill in half of the hole with the same soil that was gathered while digging, water, and then repeat the process. Build a rim of soil around the base of the plant so watering is effective.
Put mulch around your plants to help nourish and protect them. Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil and keeps weeds from growing and stealing nutrients from your plants. This is even good to use on healthy soil because it will keep it healthy and productive.
Plan your garden with care so the lasting effects will be worth the effort and very satisfying. Think ahead to the colors, smells, and fruits you would like to have in your garden. Prepare to sit back and enjoy the beauty you have created!
