The Presidio Movie Review

Thumbs Up for Sean Connery!! (1988)

By Candice Pardue

Peter Hyams, the director of "Narrow Margin" and "2010: The Year We Make Contact," does it again in this suspense-filled mystery with an all-star cast including Sean Connery, Mark Harmon, Meg Ryan, and Jack Warden. When a military policeman is brutally murdered at the Presidio military compound, Lieutenant Colonel Alan Caldwell (Sean Connery) and Police Inspector Jay Austin (Mark Harmon) must put their investigating skills together to solve the case.

There is much tension generated between Caldwell and Austin throughout the film because Caldwell helped to get Austin off the military police force a few years back. And to top it off, romance grows between Austin and Lieutenant Colonel Caldwell's daughter, Donna Caldwell (Meg Ryan). As you can imagine, Lieutenant Caldwell doesn't like this one bit, but Donna is grown-up now, and he must realize it is not his decision who she likes or doesn't like. Meg Ryan performed excellently as well as Mark Harmon.

Sean Connery delivers the same performance you would always expect as “Caldwell.” The role is an overly protective father who lost his wife and had to raise his daughter who becomes bitter at him for her mother’s death and now just wants to live her life without his concern. Meanwhile, the struggle to get along with Jay while solving the case adds more to the father’s misery. This movie is a mosh pit of mixed emotions that can be sad, funny or suspenseful.

The movie is more mystery than suspense and action. There could have been a more in-depth story line to the film for the little amount of thoughts that were in it, but the acting was good and the picture quality was excellent. This movie could very well be like a diamond in the coal because you really have to scrape off the rough edges to find the story. From a thumb fight to a car chase and, finally, a gunfight, this movie will keep you guessing until the end. Out of a scale from 1 to 10,it easily rates an 8.5. This is one of Sean Connery's greatest performances since "Highlander" and "The Untouchables." The Presidio is a classic for all generations to love and enjoy.
