Have a Fun-Packed Family Adventure in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Cascading waterfalls, historic sites, and cultural attractions all tie into one in the lovely city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Sioux Falls welcomes folks of all ages to engage in numerous activities. The city offers a family-friendly environment with many fun things to do and plenty of places to explore.

As the largest city in South Dakota, Sioux Falls boasts a population of about 142,396 (in city) as of July 2006. The city is located in Minnehaha County as the county seat. Situated on the prairie of the Great Plains, Sioux Falls thrives on livestock and agriculture and promotes abundant fishing and hunting opportunities.

In history, the Village of Sioux Falls was incorporated in 1876, and consisted of 1,200 acres. It was granted a city charter in 1883. The building of railroads brought a great Dakota boom during the 1800s and the population grew from 1880 to 10,167. But growth was slowed during the 1890s due to a severe grasshopper plague and a national depression. In the 1990s, Sioux Falls began to prosper once again, with agriculture being the main economical source during the early 1900s. In 1909, the John Morrell meat packing plant opened. Then in 1942, an airbase and a military radio and communications training school were opened. Citibank relocated to Sioux Falls in 1981. Forbes labeled Sioux Falls to be the #1 Best Small Place for Business and Careers in 2006 and 2007.

Sioux Falls Weather and Parks

Sioux Falls has a humid continental climate, meaning the area has hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. The warmest month (July) has an average temperature of 86 degrees F while the coldest month (January) has an average temperature of 5 degrees F. The average winter snowfall is 39.6 inches.

Summer is inviting to travelers due to the mild temperatures and beautiful weather. Winter weather promotes many winter activities. Sioux Falls has many parks throughout the city, with the most popular being Falls Park. Falls Park highlights the city's main attraction (hence the name Sioux Falls) - the gorgeous waterfalls on the Big Sioux River. The river is located just north of downtown. The park system of Sioux Falls features paved paths that can be used for walking, jogging, or biking. The paved path follows alongside the Big Sioux River.

Some other beautifully-kept parks in the area include Terrace Park, Yankton Trail Park, Sherman Park, and McKennon Park. For winter goers, there's the Great Bear Recreation Park, where wintry activities abound such as skiing, snow boarding, and tubing. During summer, visitors can enjoy a free sound and light show at the Falls Park, which is hosted by Wells Fargo and tells the history of the city.

Sioux Falls Family Attractions

Traveling with the family? Sioux Falls offers a number of exciting family attractions for kids of all ages. At Adventure Park, enjoy go-karts, miniature golf, paintball, pavilions, concessions, and much more. The park has theme-based activities to keep everyone busy for one day or several days! If your family loves animals, check out the Great Plains Zoo, where animal friends come out to greet you. Some of the interesting “friends” you'll meet include a Chilean flamingo, an African pigmy goat, an alpaca, a zebra, a rhino, a cheetah, a red panda, and many others.
